Central/top of South America beach town recommendations
Before I start an identical thread on a more suitable website, I thought I might see what WHOnde Nast has to offer.

Looking to spend up to ten days on a beach with a town attached (for food/drinks etc). Clear water and white sand would be great, but I'll take just a nice beach.

Flying into and out of the region on BA (has to be as I'll be using a 2-4-1 in First) and taking in a couple of other capitals then settling down for a rest for ten days or so, before heading home - so packages aren't an option. Not looking for the purest local experience, happy with it being a bit touristy - even somewhere like Cancun would fit the bill - but Mexico is Plan C as I've already been.

There are numerous options if you're willing to spend hours on a bus rattling towards a national park, but I'll be with the missus so that's not really an option.

I've wiped my knob on Judith Chalmers to no avail, and I'm really struggling to find somewhere suitable.

Suggestions?

It's been an hour. Please don't make me ask TripAdvisor.

They're frightened you'll reveal that the other half of your 2-for-1 is being taken by a Peruvian supermodel.

Jealous of you, just like they were of Zoltan...

Nice Zoltaneering here

I don't have any idea what you mean ;)

Although I think a real Zoltaneer would be paying for his ticket, rather than getting a freebie on top of one paid for with Avios.

where are you flying into? The distance between Yucatan peninsular in Mexico and somewhere like Natal in Brazil is fucking enormous.

To be fair, I'm jealous you're going to BA, I loved it when I was out there even though I had an automatic weapon pointed at me by OB or was it the army?

Fucking steaks are IMMENSE

Went to Manuel Antonio on Honeymoon last year... Beaches weren't quite pure white, but was a fantastic time. National Park had some awesome beaches and stretches of coastline, plenty to do in and around, good restaurants. Worth looking into.

Cough, there;s so much better than cancun......

off the top of my head:

Mexico: Tulum

Belize: Caye Caulker

Honduras: Utila

Panama: Bocas del Toro

Colombia: Cartagena

Brazil: Fortaleza/ Jericoacara

You don't go to Tulum to stay, you can do that from Cancun

Gavros - completely undecided. Options range from Mexico City to Port of Spain - so really only the top of South America.

Cough - BA is one of my favourite places I've been to. I've already covered a bit much of the south to go back, otherwise I'd be all over it.

Stubbo - ta. Costa Rica, amongst other places, has been winding me up. I can find nice-looking places to go, but just can't find out what they've got going on nearby - so I'll definitely look into that.

Oh and Cozumel takes some beating and my favourite place, Playa del Carmen has been transformed from a sleepy one horse town into Mexico's version of Lloret

Re: Central/top of South America beach town recommendations
Gavros - indeed, and I've looked at some of those. The only way I've seen to get to Bocas del Toro is the slow route I mentioned. Utila, IIRC, loads of the flights I was looking at went via the US which is a complication I can do without. Cartagena's beaches get slated online, although we may take it in as one of our stops en route to the sitting.

Caye Caulker rings a bell, I'll work out tonight why I'm not all over that.

I've only got two places for you and they are both in Mexico, sorry!

Zihuatanejo and Puerta Vallarta.

You been there recently? Massive eco tourism development. Better than Playa del carmen nowadays. Cozumel is great for diving but very quiet nightlife when the cruise ships leave.

What slow route?

You can get a 45 minute flight from panama city. Or if you really want to go for it, you charter a boat from Cartagena. Supposed to be fantastic. Ask Panama Hat.
